As the school year is coming to an end, we find ourselves planning vacations for summer break. Traveling as a single parent with kids can present some unique challenges, but with some preparation, it can be a rewarding experience. Here are some tips to help you navigate single parent travel with kids:

  1. Plan ahead: Research your destination and make a detailed itinerary to ensure you have everything you need.
  2. Involve your kids: Let your kids help plan the trip and get excited about the adventure.
  3. Pack smart: Pack light and bring only the essentials. Consider packing a small backpack for each child to carry their own things.
  4. Stay organized: Keep important documents, like passports and medical records, in a safe and easily accessible place.
  5. Be flexible: Things may not go according to plan, but staying flexible and positive can help you and your kids make the most of the trip.
  6. Take breaks: Schedule downtime for both you and your kids to rest and recharge.

Remember, traveling as a single parent with kids can be challenging, but it can also create wonderful memories and experiences for the whole family.

What if you can’t afford to travel?

Now for some single parents, funds can prevent you from traveling with your children, so we came up with a few ideas that would cost little to no money.

  1. Camp out in the back yard: Chances are, you know someone with a tent, if you don’t have one yourself. Set it up in the backyard, the kids will have a blast!
  2. Camping and hiking in a nearby state parks: There are so many state parks that have affordable, clean, and safe campgrounds.
  3. Road trips to nearby cities or attractions: Drive a few hours to explore a new city! If you start early, you can drive home after dinner, that way you don’t have to spend money on a hotel.
  4. Visiting local museums or art galleries: Many museums or galleries have discount days or family days where kids can get in for free. Some even host special children’s activities.
  5. Exploring nearby beaches or lakes: Many parks with lakes have beaches! I know it is not the ocean, but you can still pack a picnic lunch and build a sandcastle.
  6. Taking advantage of free or discounted activities offered by your local community center or library: Public libraries have so many fun activities over the summer. And while this is not the same as traveling, it will get you and the kids out of the house for a new experience.

Remember to plan ahead, budget wisely, and prioritize activities that will be enjoyable for both you and your kids.
